A recently implemented Managed Service

Feedback from the Trust stated “The management and strategic oversight from TFS Healthcare has been nothing but exceptional. They have been open and transparent and worked in a very collaborative way, ensuring they were able to fulfil all contract obligations without any hidden expectations.”

Requirement

TFS Healthcare, as a trusted provider to Kent Community Hospital Foundation Trust (KCHFT), were approached to urgently supply, due to system wide pressures (January 2020), registered nurses, Occupational Therapists/Physiotherapists (AHPs) and Healthcare Assistants to establish a 15-bed CQC registered escalation ward at Westview Community Hospital. An additional ward at Westbrook House Integrated Care Centre (WHICC) was commissioned in April due to further pressures faced from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Demand outside current infrastructure

The demand on the NHS during the winter period, which was further intensified with the ferocity of the COVID-19 pandemic, was putting acute settings at breaking point. In establishing two additional wards we were able to support KCHFT provide a step-down service to patients from acute settings, which was managed in a safe/professional manner ensuring correct staffing, competence, and governance, was in place.

Collaboration

Understanding the magnitude of the situation, a dedicated TFS operational team was created to work directly with key KCHFT stakeholders. The teams worked closely to ensure successful implementation and delivery of the managed service at both Westview and WHICC. This presented TFS with several challenges that needed to be addressed/overcome, and it was essential we mobilised quickly and executed an agreed project plan.

A more cost-effective solution

We fully understood the issues KCHFT faced in being able to open the wards. Due to a shortage in staffing and high vacancy levels, TFS provided a service that was not only financially viable but provided additional support to patients following an acute episode, in an area local to their families.

Prioritising Patient Outcomes

The wards opening gave KCHFT a seamless step-down service to patients from an acute setting. TFS worked with the MDT to ensure an effective patient centric discharge approach. Our planning included daily clinical meetings and inclusion of dedicated AHPs to reduce the chance of a re-admission.
